Meaning of Towkay?

“Towkay” (pronounced as “tao-kay”) is a form of address meaning “master” or “sir”. It is also frequently used to refer to someone as a boss, a business owner or an entrepreneur. The word “Towkay” is formed from two Chinese words 头家 (pronounced as “tou-jia”), which literally means head of a household. But “Towkay” is more commonly pronounced in the Hokkien form, a common Chinese dialect, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia.
